Automotive AC Service and Repair
Some of the more common air conditioning complaints are:
- My AC is blowing warm or hot air when its set to the cold setting.
- My AC works sometimes but not others.
- The temperature is cool on some vents but warm on others.
- My AC system does not cycle on.
- The AC button on the dash will turn itself off and not work.
The main function of the air conditioner in your car is to cool the air that is coming into your passenger compartment but it can also effect your defrost function in the winter. It does this by using 3 main parts of the air conditioning system: the condenser, evaporator, and compressor. Other components found in most AC systems are, lines to and from each component, dryer, expansion valve, orifice tube, pressure sensor, temp sensor and pressure switch. The air conditioning system uses a gas called freon to cool the outside air on its way into the cabin of your vehicle.
Freon is a greenhouse gas and should be evacuated and filled with the proper equipment. Some A/C systems will not work properly if the freon level is not correct. Unlike some fluids in your vehicle, freon cannot be filled up as it is properly filled with a specialized machine that pulls air out of the system with a vacuum and fills it back up with the needed freon. Freon also acts as a lubricant for your compressor. When this level becomes low, damage to the compressor internally can occur leading to multiple parts needing to be replaced.
There are multiple ways an A/C system can become inoperable but the most common are:
- Freon level is low caused by a leak in the system.
- Broken or failed component is turning the system off.
Detecting damage or leaks to the A/C system of your vehicle requires diagnosis with specialized equipment in most cases and should be performed by a professional.
